Description:
Herbert provided a summary of his education and academic career in a letter to the Rector of Exeter College, Lewis Richard Farnell upon his application for a lectureship in Oriental languages.
He says: "I had taken up the study of Oriental Languages in accordance with a family tradition, my Grandfather, the late Dr. Louis Loewe, having been Oriental Linguist to the late Duke of Sussex, and my uncle Dr. Hartwig Hirschfeld, Lecturer in Arabic at Jews' and University Colleges, London. "
