Object 9. Letter from Herbert to Basil Henriques (1890-1961)

3 November 1915

Description:

The letter on exhibit was penned by Herbert on 3 November 1915, before his departure, to his brother-in-law thanking him for the warm welcome he received having arrived in Oxford.

“Basil Henriques had felt, whilst an undergraduate at Oxford, the lack of Jewish religious leadership and the likelihood of Jewish students (at the time almost exclusively from upper-middle-class Jewish homes, with rudimentary Jewish education) dropping out of the Anglo-Jewish community. He had been influenced by Herbert Loewe’s combination of orthodox Jewish practice, deep spiritual sensitivity, and his tolerance, and took the initiative in bringing H.L. to Oxford where, on an academic footing, he could provide a chaplaincy service and leadership in synagogue.” (Raphael Loewe, 13 June 2006)
