In preparation for this event Raphael contacted people that had been SOTS members before the Second World War when his father was president.
Raphael Loewe’s original letter (7th may 1981) said: "I am addressing this advance letter to the thirty members of the society who were already members in 1939 [...] under the presidency of my father".
In response, he heard from Theodore Gaster (13th June 1981): "Your letter brought back ‘vivid memories [...] especially of the several kindnesses which were shown to me by your father during the years when I was being generally kicked around. I remember him always with affection, and it is a pleasant thought that you are currently sitting where he sat at the SOTS and that Michael is sitting where both my father and I myself sat".
... and from Aubrey Johnson (20th May 1981): "I frequently have reason to recall how greatly helped I was, at the Summer Meeting in Cambridge in 1937, to have your father at my elbow uttering helpful comments in public and even once in a whisper, when the time came for a discussion of my somewhat controversial paper[...]. I have cherished it ever since as a model of gracious behaviour. I recall it indeed quite frequently, sometimes for my own encouragement and occasionally for the encouragement of others".
