Object 7. Observations on a unique cufic gold coin

London, 1849

Description:

Louis Loewe's interest in numismatics reaches far back to his post-doctoral months spent in Hamburg, before arriving to settle in England, where Loewe was entrusted with the classification of Oriental coins in the Sprewitz Cabinet. His expertise in numismatics was further broadened during his research travels in Africa: on the banks of the Nile, at Thebes, Alexandria, Cairo, and elsewhere, Loewe found rare coins which he then added to his private collections to be studied at a later time. The cufic gold coin he received as a present in 1839, from Bakhri Bey, the secretary to the late Ibrahim Pasha, during his visit to Damascus.

The exhibited pamplet is a printed version of a talk Loewe read at a meeting of the Numismatic Society of London in 1849, entitled "Observations on a unique cufic gold coin, issued by Al-Âamir Beâkhcam Allah, Abû Ali Manzour Ben Mustali, tenth Caliph of the Fatimite dynasty". Note Loewe's dedication to Sir Moses Montefiore 'with the author's respectful compliments' above the title proper.
