Description:
The idea of erecting a Jewish theological seminary in the Holy Land was conceived by Sir Moses Montefiore in 1863 in commemoration of his "ever lamented and blessed wife" who died in 1862. In the end, the plan was subjected to certain adjustments, and a College founded in Ramsgate by a deed of 1866, on a newly acquired plot of land adjoining the Montefiore synagogue, with specially designed accommodation for fellows and students, and its own library. Louis Loewe, chosen a Trustee in place of the late Benjamin Cohen in 1867, was then appointed the College's Principal, and the College consecrated and opened for functioning in 1869.
Louis Loewe took special care of the College's library collections. The exhibited items are two hand-written library catalogues of books, manuscripts, periodicals in the library of the College. Holdings are listed by shelf, certain special donations and acquisitions are mentioned with dates ranging from the 1870s to the early 1880s.
