Object 7. James Loewe's application to become Director of the Jewish Colonial Trust

16 September 1898

Description:

This handwritten letter, in German, (16/09/1898) describes James' international experiences as a result of his father Louis Loewe’s travels, and his knowledge of English, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Hebrew. The letter also outlines his career in banking and then translation.
In 1995 Raphael Loewe was given this copy of the original handwritten letter in German and he created his own transcript of the original.

The Jewish Colonial Trust was an organisation first referred to as the Jüdische Colonialbank, and it aimed to financially support the Zionist movement but also to assist Jews especially those in the middle east to seek employment: ‘To promote, develop, work, and carry on colonization schemes in the East, by preference in Palestine and Syria, and further to promote, develop, work, and carry on industries and undertakings in Palestine, Syria, or in any other part of the world’.  Therefore it was to operate as a business and not as a charity; the aim was to enable independence, and diplomatic negotiations to further the Zionist movement.
