Object 12. Psalm 121 and note to Basil Henriques

First World War

Description:

A typed note of Psalm 121 with the relevant Hebrew script handwritten and amendments to the English text. Raphael noted that James Loewe wrote this note for his son-in-law, Basil Henriques as he was about to leave for the front during the First World War. The psalm describes God’s protection ‘over Israel’ so that ‘when thou goest abroad neither the sun shall scorch thee by day nor the moon hurt thee by night’. The section concludes: ‘May he guard thy present going out and God willing also thy happy coming in now and ever more’.

On the reverse of the note is a personal addition: 'Dear Boy, If by any mild chance, I should not see you before you go, my prayers go with you, in the rendering – on other side- of your own club’s daily prayers, Psalm 121. Ever your affectionate new father’.
